The birthplace of geology …

September 3, 2008

I can’t believe having spent most of my younger years in Dunbar that I’d never visited Siccar Point on the East Lothain coast.   It was one of the main stops on our field-trip skills day being run by Moray House for the Geography PGDE.   It is the site of a major uncomformity, that was ‘discovered’ by James Hutton, Playfair etal way back in the c17th.  Having spied what was going on from a boat, their conclusions from looking at the fauls and folding in the rock  formed the basis of modern geology – and led to a more enlighetend and accurate age of the earth.   Which is a nice link to consider in the month of the LHC going live in Switzerland.

Anyway I’d recommend a visit , it’s accessed via a c1km walk, then down a fairly steep but safe grass bank down to the uncomformity itself . It’s a do-able field-trip with S1/S2  if you want to go to the effort, but watch them at the bottom as there are some drops. I would think it’s an absolute must for anyone serious about their geology/physical geography.
